Spring Steelhead

Driftless Trout & Summer Smallmouth

After the spring thaw, migratory Rainbow trout, or "Steelhead," enter the river systems to begin their spawning process. These hard fighters are very eager to bite this time of year, making them a blast to target in the spring months. In early to mid March, expect a lot of bobber fishing with beads and egg sacs. Followed up by lots of beads and hardware (spinners & spoons) fishing in April and well into May some years.

It is not unheard of to hook 20+ fish in an outing in spring time. Converting those 20 bites into fish is the tricky part.

After the lake-run Steelhead & Brown Trout head back to the lake in mid-spring, we start chasing Inland Trout & Smallmouth Bass.

The Driftless Region of Wisconsin is a very unique, scenic area that offers a variety of species and types of water to target.  Although some public access, the vast majority of lands surrounding trout streams are privately owned.  Here is where the 13' SmithFly Raft comes into play, allowing us to access miles & miles of untouched, pristine water.  The Inland Trout fishing is mainly done using fly fishing gear with streamers and spin gear with hardbaits to target bigger, wild fish.

Smallmouth Bass offer a great experience to all levels of anglers.  Expect sunny, warm days with great action and the chance at a Trophy Smallmouth as well!  We target the Bass on both Fly and Spin setups, as well as Float Fishing for them sometimes using jigs.
